About us

Steele's Island is a unique, privately owned island, totally surrounded by sandy shores, in the popular southern beaches area on the picturesque south east coast of Tasmania. It is easily accessible by vehicle at all times of the year via a causeway and small bridge – no ferries, no necessary flights.

Serenity, seclusion and privacy are created by the sheltered bay on one side of the island and the picturesque Carlton River Estuary, Carlton Bluff and Carlton Beach on the other.  Hobart’s majestic Mount Wellington can be seen in the distance across Frederick Henry Bay, providing a truly scenic backdrop.

Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, together with panoramic water views, create the perfect setting for an unforgettable experience with friends, family or work colleagues all year round.

Steeped in history dating back forty thousand years, one of the many beautiful features of the Island is the significant and protected evidence of its past indigenous inhabitants, in the form of a classical example of a ‘middens’.  Steele’s Island also showcases its recorded connection to the Tasmanian convict era, with connections to the Norfolk Island and New South Wales penal settlements, and, in reflecting the rustic charm of the early settler living, it offers guests all of the following:
